About Us

The closure 20 years ago of the UK’s last remaining consumer of hard zinc ‘drosses’ led to them being exported overseas. UK drosses were sent to places as far flung as Malaysia, south east Asia and Australia, only to be reimported as re-processed zinc oxide many months later.

Recognising the inefficiency and the overall negative environmental impact of these combined movements, the Directors of FBM Metals (UK) Ltd. partnered with an experienced producer of zinc oxide in 2019 to design and build the UK’s only ZnO production facility. The facility is located in Grimsby, close to the port of Grimsby.

A sustainable solution

Our aim in establishing a UK-based facility was to provide an efficient, sustainable solution for UK producers of zinc waste ‘feed’ materials as well as consumers of zinc oxides. This in turn completes our portfolio for the recycling of UK zinc secondaries, making us the country’s largest zinc waste recycling business.

Our two state-of-the-art furnaces enable us to operate 24-hours-a-day.

Our plant was designed and built in 2019 at an overall cost of £5 million. It offers an efficient, cutting-edge solution for the recycling of zinc secondaries in the UK and beyond.

Custom design and build

Our plant was built to a well established ‘French process’ design, and is fully optimised to process Zinc Dross waste materials whilst maintaining the highest quality of end product.

The FBM Zinc team numbers over 25 colleagues who are all trained to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the plant at all times.

The entire process is rigorously and accurately monitored to meet and exceed all safety, environmental and performance targets.

Our facility is regulated by the Environment Agency under regulation 13 of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016. As an operator we have demonstrated BAT control measures (best available techniques) and BREF performance parameters for energy, emissions and process efficiencies.

Permit Number GP3702PD.
